Moon Jars

I’m passionate about making moon jars.  An aspect of the moon jar that appeals to me is that the traditional undecorated surface of the jars aligned with Confucian ideals of restraint, simplicity and contentment when first made in Korea in the Joseon period.

I would like my jars to have presence and inspire contemplation of it’s simplicity which is as appeallng now as it was when first made 600 years ago.

My contemporary interpretation of the ancient moon jar respects this iconic form while infusing it with a contemporary aesthetic by applying untraditional glaze finishes which reference the jar’s cultural history and also where I live on the coast.

The glazes used are fired in both electric and gas kilns and some of the raw ingredients used I source from the local coastline.
