Scaphium
(Latin) - bowl/vessel
These dark clay pieces reference vessels used in ancient rituals. The black clay used to make this work immediately sparked my thoughts of how clay has been used to make receptacles for millennia, the only change being a choice of firing process.
The concave curve is a feature in most of the pieces because it is a shape I am drawn to and because the strong silhouette the dark clay naturally creates was important to me. I left this work unglazed to highlight the form and to allude to primitive artefacts.
